Serbian police chief arrested for allegedly torturing students in government building garage A court in Belgrade has ordered up to 30 days of detention for Igor Žmirić, the commander of the special anti-terrorist unit in Serbia, and eight current and former members of the police unit that guards officials and state buildings. They are suspected of abusing and torturing students and other citizens in the garage of the Serbian government building in August 2025. The arrests were made on November 6. Prosecutors allege that the officers used force and threats to cause "extreme pain and suffering" to extract information, intimidate and illegally punish the victims. The court said it ordered the arrest to prevent the suspects from influencing witnesses, and because the alleged crime had caused public panic. Prosecutors name Marko Kryczak, a member of the same security unit, as the first suspect in the case. He is already in custody in a separate murder case. Student Nikolina Sinalic publicly accused Krychak of threatening to rape her that night. Another suspect, retired unit member Milan Vukovich, now serves as acting director of the detention facility where Krychak is being held. Zmiric took command of the special counter-terrorism unit in November 2025.
