⠀ He was accused of killing his parents. Now he wants access to their money. ⠀.
The case against Nick Reiner created an unusual legal conflict outside the criminal courtroom.
⠀.
Reiner is accused of murdering his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner, in December 2025.
⠀.
He pleaded not guilty.
⠀.
While awaiting trial, he struggles to access the money held in a trust his parents set up.
⠀.
His lawyers claim that the funds belong to him and can help pay for private legal representation.
⠀.
The opposing side brought up the so-called California Slayer Act, which could prevent someone found responsible for the intentional killing of another person from profiting financially from that death.
⠀.
At a hearing held on October 23, both sides agreed to seek mediation regarding the disputed trust funds.
⠀ The judge also approved limited payments for the Reiners' Prison Commission account, limited to $300 at any time.
⠀.
All this does not establish his guilt in the murder case.
⠀.
But the financial dispute may affect how his defense is financed as the criminal proceedings move forward.
