The extent of the normal open pit mines will not surprise the coal miners. But the German Hambach is something with something. Development of the deposit began in 1978, the first ton of brown coal was mined in 1984. During the last decades, more than a billion tons of coal were produced here. In its best years, the mine produced about 40 million tons per year, and the load volume reached 250-300 million cubic meters per year. Now production is being phased out: in 2024 it amounted to 14.9 million tons. They plan to completely stop production in three years, after which a lake with an area of almost 40 square kilometers will appear on the site of the huge quarry. Koala on Telegram | up to MAX.
