The White House is monitoring a case of suspected plague in the Irkutsk region of Russia after a 28-year-old worker at the Epidemic Institute died following a laboratory accident.

Daria Shipilova broke a test tube containing the pneumonic plague pathogen on September 25, was hospitalized with severe pneumonia on September 29, and died between October 1 and 2.

Authorities have quarantined several medical facilities and placed nearly 200 contacts under surveillance. So far, they have all tested negative and have shown no symptoms.
