French President Macron:
What allowed our democracies to take hold was that we told the middle classes that they would live better and better. The idea of progress is therefore related to our democracies and this balance.
We stopped keeping the economic promise. It started with deindustrialization. Globalization from the 1990s onwards weakened this consensus through waves of relocation.
The promise that the political economy would continually enable you to live better has not been fulfilled.
The big blow was the crisis of 2008–2012. And who paid the bill? the middle classes.
Even in less affected countries, some groups have not yet fully recovered the purchasing power and standard of living they had before that crisis. There was a feeling of betrayal.
