Today there is a temptation to expect science to provide a solution and comfort to all our suffering.

The risk is often to fall into an illusion. When science and technology are not enlightened by conscience, they can offer immediate solutions that seem responsive to the wants and needs of men and women, but in reality can seriously lead them away from the good they deeply aspire to.

Sometimes I watch with concern the current developments in companies that risk turning science and technology into a profitable enterprise, encouraging genetic manipulation, surrogacy, organ procurement and offering programmed death. We should not forget that mutual respect and protection of the life of every human being is the responsibility of each and every one, starting with the conversion of reason and heart, and requires a true and selfless commitment towards our brothers and sisters.
