The last SR-71 Blackbird ever built has disappeared from its outdoor display at Edwards AFB.

NASA 844 - the last Blackbird to fly (October 1999) - was moved to the hangar earlier this year.

NASA won't say where it is or why.

NASA Administrator Isaacman recently showed a dark silhouette of an aircraft similar to the SR-71 while talking about "getting back to the business of flying high and fast again."

When asked if it was Blackbird, he replied: "Are you sure it's Blackbird?" NASA claims that it "has no further information".

It is the most upgraded and preserved of the 32 SR-71s ever built.

A full return to flight would be extremely difficult - the JP-7's fuel infrastructure is gone and the J58 engines are unique - but using it as a high-speed research model is more likely.

The plane that once cruised at Mach 3.2 above 80,000 feet is simply no longer sitting where everyone could see it.
