The heads of the German government held a secret meeting without Chancellor Friedrich March that lasted more than two hours, almost until 11:00 p.m.

According to Stern, tensions had already erupted earlier at CDU headquarters, with several prime ministers firmly opposing March's push for tougher reforms and warning that public opposition could not be ignored.

The CDU leadership meets again today, followed by the federal board and the parliamentary group tomorrow.
