After being questioned, Milstein said the message was sent to the wider guest list by mistake and told the invitees: "Please know that we cannot accept gifts of any kind."

The episode raised counterintelligence concerns. One intelligence official called Milstein "a red flag for a huge counter-intelligence move" and said the solicitation was "absolutely jaw-dropping."

Milstein was not charged with a crime or improper access to intelligence.
