US Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau has delayed plans for a bull sculpture at the US pavilion for Expo 2027 in Belgrade because he feared its imagery could resemble the biblical Baal or Golden Calf.

Landau released an Aug. 19 email discussing the symbolism, prompting derision from some State Department officials, who said the episode reflected his tendency to focus on unusual online controversies.

Since then, officials have debated how to preserve the concept of the bull while avoiding any association with satanic or pagan imagery.
