New: The Democrats in the House of Representatives are facing a wave of calls urging them to reject Hakeem Jeffries as speaker despite the party's absolute victory in the elections.
Some lawmakers report receiving more than 500 calls, while a petition opposing Jeffries has garnered nearly 900,000 signatures.
One Democrat said, "That's our No. 1 issue, and it's not close," while another reported that "a lot of people are saying get Jamie Raskin to speak."
Progressive activists oppose Jeffries because of his pro-Israel ties and perceived lack of opposition to Trump.
However, Jefferies remains the overwhelming favorite, with one senior progressive putting his odds of defeat at "0.0%."
