Flash: A gunman in a car drove to Krakow's main market square and opened fire on people, killing five and injuring a dozen or more.
Police initially said the shooter had been detained, but a later update said he had been shot by police and taken to hospital, and a police officer was among the injured.
Ambulances, firefighters and an air ambulance helicopter responded to the square, people sheltered in shops and cafes, and St. Mary's Basilica was closed.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was being briefed by the Minister of the Interior and that the authorities were investigating the circumstances of what he called an attack ("Zemach").
The motive has not been confirmed.
