Pete Hegseth approved an expanded National Guard presence in Washington, including military vehicles, police cars and boats.
The forces will support police operations targeting drug dealers and gangs, but will not be able to make arrests or pursue suspects.
The expansion will remain in place until the end of 2026, while the wider deployment is expected to continue until January 2029.
