Who are we Germans, with our difficult past, to place ourselves on such a high moral ground?
Shouldn't we look at the United States with some admiration, humility and gratitude?
Who freed us from the Nazis? The Americans were among them, of course, alongside the British, the French and the Russians. Also the Ukrainians, by the way, were part of the Soviet Union at the time.
Who made our economic recovery possible, especially in West Germany? the americans
Who believed in 1989 that a united Germany would integrate peacefully into the world? the americans
In Europe there were many doubts, for understandable reasons. But the Americans stood behind us and said: "We are giving this Germany another chance."
We must take all this into account when we sometimes need to take a deep breath, when we are angry or shaking our heads.
I see the US as a country that remains connected to us through friendship, both socially and politically, in the long run.
