Trump privately questioned how Republicans got into such serious political trouble as his party headed for a crushing midterm defeat, according to CNN interviews with more than a dozen Trump aides, advisers and Republican operatives. During a campaign rally in October, Trump reportedly asked an insider: “How did we get here? One person familiar with the exchange said the president continued to raise the question as he traveled across the country to rescue struggling Republican candidates. Insiders blamed Trump's decision to go to war with Iran, which triggered months of election planning and sparked an economic backlash. "There are a lot of people who don't know why we had to do this," said the Trump adviser, who described preparations for the party as "outdated." Another ally warned that the White House "underestimated the backlash at the base." Republican officials also criticized Trump's dismissal of credibility concerns, weak candidate selection and delay in campaign spending, with one strategist concluding: "Frankly, there's only one person to blame."
