The Trump administration's policies weaken scientific research in the US and threaten the country's technological and military dominance, according to an investigation by the New York Times.
Pentagon labs lost 14 percent of staff, the Department of Energy over 1,000 scientists and technical workers, and biomedical researchers faced more than 2,000 delayed or canceled grants.
Funding uncertainty and political interference have disrupted universities and research agencies as China closes the science gap.
The White House rejects the criticism, saying Trump is ushering in "a new golden age of American science."
