The Pentagon has urged some NATO allies to tone down their public rhetoric against Russia.
Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby reportedly warned European officials against "prying" in Moscow, citing statements portraying Russia as "cornered like a rat."
One European official summed up the US message this way: "We are helping you. The Americans are there. Just don't be loud. Don't make noise."
Some European officials expressed puzzlement at the advice, arguing that their assessments of the Russian threat had already been measured.
