Serbia recorded its highest turnout in years in Sunday's crucial parliamentary election, seen as the biggest challenge yet to Aleksandar Vucic's hold on power for more than a decade.

Election inspector CRTA put the turnout at 67.8% by 7:00 p.m., compared to 55.5% at the same point in the 2023 election, with long lines reported across the country and at polling stations abroad.

Analysts say a high turnout favors the student-backed list, which grew out of nearly two years of protests sparked by the November 2024 fatal canopy collapse at Novi Sad train station.

Vucic said he would accept defeat, with the first results expected later this evening.
