The conditions enabling Ms. Machado's safe return to Venezuela are a direct result of US-backed reconciliation talks, which have already seen hundreds of political prisoners released and hundreds of political opposition representatives return from exile.

The United States expects that the freedoms of all sectors of politics in Venezuela will continue to be respected.

We also expect all political actors to support these talks which represent the best chance Venezuela has had in thirty years to peacefully achieve not only free and fair elections but lasting democracy.
