France is investigating a racist terror motive after a deadly shooting spree.
A gunman opened fire from his car on passers-by in Trapp and neighboring La Verriere, west of Paris, killing one person and seriously wounding at least four, including a 12-year-old girl.
The attack began around 10:30 a.m. in three separate locations, including a bus stop, a gas station, a playground and a health center, with Malukud Mayor Ali Raba saying the gunman fired randomly and "wanted to cause carnage."
A 26-year-old man was killed, while the girl was hit several times and later described as stable.
Raba said that the dead man was of African descent and one of the wounded was of North African descent.
The suspect, a 39-year-old man from Plaisir identified as Kevin T., was arrested within about 10 minutes in nearby Coignières and was reportedly using a World War II-era Stan submachine gun. He was known to the police for minor offenses but not to the intelligence services.
France's anti-terrorism prosecutor's office took over the case, investigating murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist attack, with the aggravating circumstance that victims may have been targeted due to their ethnicity, race or religion.
