Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon reached an initial 10-year agreement to produce at least 850 F-35s.
Lockheed will invest at least $7 billion of its own money to support production, targeting 156 aircraft annually.
The deal also covers international orders and aims to reduce costs and bottlenecks in the supply chain.
The agreement is not yet a definitive order, and its implementation remains subject to congressional approval and funding.
