Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will arrive in Ankara today, the first bilateral visit to Turkey by a Canadian leader, as he seeks to reduce Canada's dependence on the United States.

He is supposed to meet President Erdogan and sign a declaration deepening cooperation in areas including defense and energy.

A Turkish diplomatic source said ties would be upgraded to a "strategic partnership."

Carney is on a global trade push to protect Canada from Trump's tariffs.

It aims to double Canada's exports outside the US within a decade.

The two leaders opened free trade talks at the NATO summit in Ankara in July.

Turkey is looking for investment in its defense industry, nuclear power plants and mining sector.
