Young girls in Azerbaijan are being rejected from school for wearing a hijab, and they're fighting back. On September 21, Azerbaijan's cabinet amended school uniform rules to ban clothing that goes against the "principle of secularism" in education, effectively targeting the hijab without naming it. Since the beginning of October, schools have been removing hijab-wearing students and teachers from classrooms. One young girl's plea: I am a boy. I want to learn! I also have this right - but they don't let me study! A teacher was filmed holding back tears while comforting a student who had to choose between her faith and her education: You have to take it off like you're guilty? don't cry we are with you everything will be fine. Non-hijab wearing students joined the demonstrations in solidarity. "No one gets it," said one. Teachers held classes outside instead of enforcing the ban, and defiant students declared: If they throw us through the door, we'll go back through the window. Police arrested 37 people, and Instagram and TikTok were shut down as protests spread across the country. Source: Al Jazeera
