Japan has protested Russia's extradition requests for International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane and eight other senior officials, calling the measures "unjust and unacceptable."
Moscow issued warrants for the nine officials following the ICC's 2023 arrest warrant for Putin for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. A Russian court sentenced them in absentia last year.
Japanese Prime Minister Sana Takaichi criticized the sanctions, reaffirming Japan's support for the ICC and pledging to continue contact with Washington.
