Pope Leo XIV:
The death penalty is not acceptable because it is a violation of a person's immunity and dignity.
It is possible to preserve the common good and meet the demands of justice without resorting to the death penalty: effective detention systems have been developed that protect citizens and at the same time do not completely deny the guilty the possibility of redemption.
