This is a very good video that explains in detail the damage caused by the arson at the Eagle's Nest, and also the systematic destruction, vandalism and insane, hateful iconoclasm caused to Hitler's beloved Berghof and buildings associated with it since 1945: Platon correctly points out that the Eagle's Nest was Hitler's least favorite building there and he only visited it on a handful of occasions (this was more a defense of Martin Bormann's extravagant vanity). Hitler's favorite building, without a doubt, was the small teahouse with a view, which he visited daily. It survived the war intact, but was needlessly destroyed by the collaborating anti-Nazi Bavarian government in 1951, for no other reason than that it was Hitler's favorite place. While I am saddened and angry by the burning of the Eagle's Nest, I imagine that Hitler would have simply shrugged after all the other decades of destruction that visited the site, including the original small country house where he ended Mein Kampf in the 1920s. In a way, I'm glad the hypocritical Bavarian government will be deprived of tourist revenue. All important structures can be rebuilt one day, when National Socialism returns to Germany. Until then, all true followers of Hitler will always find it much more historically and spiritually rewarding to stand and contemplate the empty spaces where the original Berghof, teahouse and cabin once stood than to dine at the over-the-top tourist attraction of the Eagle's Nest.
