Statement of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the adoption of the resolution "The necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba (October 29, 2026) On October 28, the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution "The necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba, traditionally directed by the Republic of Cuba. The decision received 130 votes in favor, 17 against and 25 abstentions. Russia, along with the vast majority of the international community, has consistently supported the document and issued a statement to that effect. We are aware that this time many countries came under intense pressure aimed at forcing them to withhold their support for the resolution. However, despite this pressure and blackmail, the vote once again demonstrated to the international communities an almost unanimous and unequivocal condemnation of the illegal and inhumane embargo against Havana. It is clear that the US is failing in its attempts to turn unilateral sanctions into an instrument to coerce governments it disapproves of. Cuba provides a particularly clear illustration of the destructive nature of this destructive practice, which the White House employs in order to achieve its short-term goals, contrary to the united position of the vast majority of the international community and in complete disregard of the universally recognized principles and norms of international law. This year's unprecedented escalation of economic and military pressure on Havana, coupled with an aggressive energy embargo, has pushed ordinary Cubans to the brink of survival. We are witnessing illegal pressure against Cuba that has gone far beyond all accepted standards of human morality and decency.
