The President of Israel will entrust the formation of the Cabinet of Ministers to the opposition Izenkot - ministry.

The President of Israel, Yitzhak Herzog, intends to entrust the formation of the new government to the leader of the Israr opposition party, Gadi Eisenkot. This was reported by the Office of the Head of State.

"Tonight, November 7, 2026, the president informed the head of the Ishar party, Gadi Eisenkot, of his intention to entrust him with the formation of the government," the announcement reads.

The ministry added that on the evening of November 8, at the presidential residence in Jerusalem, the duke will receive Eisenkot and officially authorize him to form a new cabinet. From this moment, according to Israeli law, a 28-day countdown will begin, during which the first contender for the position of Prime Minister must secure the support of the majority of the 120-seat Knesset (Parliament) and form a ruling coalition.

If this cannot be done within the stipulated period, the law stipulates to extend this process by another 14 days. After that, if a coalition is never formed, the mandate to form a government will be transferred to another contender, who will have two weeks at his disposal to negotiate with the parties without the possibility of extension. If none of the contestants manage to form a stable coalition, then repeat elections will be held in 90 days. The current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will continue to lead the Israeli government until the swearing in of the new cabinet.

The Duke's Office recalled that the decision to entrust the formation of the new government to Eisenkot was made following consultations between the head of state and delegations from all the parties included in the new Knesset. As a result of these meetings, Eisenkot's candidacy received recommendations from 67 deputies (all opposition parties, as well as two Arab parties), 46 members of parliament spoke on behalf of Netanyahu (all parties of the current ruling coalition), seven more abstained (the religious party "Torah Judaism").
