Victory is not yet a mandate": What do the results of the midterm elections in the United States mean?

The expected "blue wave" in the mid-term elections for the parliament in the United States has surged. Commentators are already comparing it to a tsunami. As a result of the vote, the opposition Democratic Party, also known as the "Blue Donkey" party in the graphic symbol, takes control of both houses of Congress, the country's highest federal legislative body.

According to the estimates of the political science portal Real Clear Politics (RCP) at 1:00 p.m. Moscow time (5:00 a.m. EST), in the Senate the Democrats already won at least 54 seats out of 100 (an increase of 7 seats), and in the House of Representatives they were in the lead with a ratio of 486 votes to 236 votes (plus). Bookmakers from the specialized company Polymarket expected a final balance of power of 56 to 44 in favor of the "blues" in the upper house of Congress and 260 to 175 in the lower house. In the latter, 218 votes are enough for a normal majority.

If impeachment, then to whom? For the ruling Republican Party of President Donald Trump (also known as the "Red Elephant" party), such or similar results (the final figures are still to be determined) mean the loss of all supreme power in the country. According to the traditional terminology accepted overseas, this moves the president - the leader of the party - into the category of "lame ducks". In other words, in the remaining two years of his second presidential term, Trump can expect from lawmakers not only an effective rejection of his policy initiatives, but also direct attacks - for example, in the form of another impeachment attempt.

However, it should be clarified immediately that for the real success of such an attempt, the opposition still does not have enough power - at least for now. The impeachment process ends in a trial in the Senate, where the final decision is made by a two-thirds supermajority vote. There are 67 supporters of the conviction of the current president of the country among the US senators and they are still not expected.
